Ingredient pairing

Can I mix retinol and glycolic acid?

Not on the same night. Glycolic acid is the most penetrating common AHA; stacked with retinol it is how barriers get wrecked — alternate evenings and wear sunscreen.

Based on the library entries for Retinol and Glycolic Acid— cosmetic layering guidance, not medical advice.

The short answer

Glycolic acid and retinol are both strong on texture and both raise irritation and sun sensitivity. The ingredient library lists them as a do-not-layer pair because same-night stacking is a classic way to go from “glow” to stinging water.

You can still use both in one week. Keep glycolic acid to two or three evenings maximum, keep retinol on different evenings, and leave at least one recovery night with cleanser, moisturiser, and nothing heroic.

If glycolic acid already stings alone, do not “toughen up” by adding retinol. Step down to lactic or mandelic acid, or pause acids entirely until the barrier is quiet.

How to use both without stacking them

  1. Glycolic nights: AHA → moisturiser. No retinoid.
  2. Retinol nights: dry skin → retinol → moisturiser. No AHA.
  3. Cap glycolic acid at a few nights a week even without retinol — daily AHA plus retinoid is not a badge of honour.
  4. Morning after either active: sunscreen. Both increase UV sensitivity.

Retinol + Glycolic Acid questions

Can I use glycolic acid every night if I skip retinol?

Most people should not. Two to three nights a week is the usual ceiling, and stacking it with a retinoid on the same night is how barriers get wrecked.

What about lactic or mandelic acid instead?

Gentler AHAs are easier to schedule around retinol, but they still belong on non-retinol nights while you are learning your tolerance. The library also marks lactic and mandelic acids as avoid-with-retinol for same-step use.
