Barrier

Panthenol

A soothing humectant that helps calm irritated, over-treated skin. Common in barrier repair creams and after-sun products.

INCI: Panthenol · Also known as Pro-vitamin B5, Dexpanthenol

What it does

Panthenol converts to vitamin B5 in the skin and works as both a humectant and a soothing agent. It shows up wherever a formula is aiming at comfort — barrier creams, post-procedure products, sensitive-skin lines.

It is a good supporting ingredient rather than a headline one. Nobody transforms their skin with panthenol, but a lot of people stop their skin stinging with it.

Patch-test protocol

Panthenol is among the gentlest ingredients to patch. Still test new "cica + panthenol" cocktails for three nights if botanicals have bothered you before — the extract blend is the likelier trigger.

Spray formats can mist into eyes — patch on the cheek rather than relying on a forearm mist that never matches facial exposure.

After-sun gels with panthenol can include menthol or fragrance that sting — patch the exact SKU, not a different "B5" cream from the same brand line.

Cosmetic caution for home use — not a diagnosis or medical advice. Stop and seek a professional if you get swelling, blistering, or symptoms that worry you.

Reintroducing after a break

After a barrier injury from actives, panthenol is a first-week comfort ingredient. Use it freely in creams or sprays; no ramp-up required. Keep it in the routine while you slowly reintroduce the active that caused the crash.

If you stripped back to water and a single cream, panthenol can return in that cream or as a separate serum the same week. It is support, not a load-bearing active you schedule around.

During a retinoid restart, keeping panthenol in the morning moisturiser costs nothing and often makes the evening active more tolerable. Drop actives before you drop the comfort ingredients.

Serum, cream, or encapsulated?

Creams, lotions, and mist/essences all work; serums with panthenol are supporting players. Encapsulation does not meaningfully change panthenol for home use.

After-sun and post-procedure style creams are the formats where panthenol usually sits at useful levels — a tiny mention at the end of an INCI list is mostly labelling.

Sprays are convenient after cleansing; just follow with cream if your climate is dry, because a mist alone rarely replaces an occlusive seal.

Look for panthenol in the first half of the INCI list when calming is the goal. A last-place mention in a crowded serum is unlikely to be doing the comfort work the marketing implies.

Layer panthenol under sunscreen in the morning without worry — it is not a photosensitising active, and comfort under SPF is one of its quieter jobs.

Calming and hydrating irritated skin. It is a mainstay of barrier-repair formulas and a sensible ingredient to look for after over-exfoliating.
